How Do We Treat Lymphedema?
There are a variety of treatments for lymphedema that may be used depending on the severity of the condition. At Orthopedic Sports Therapy, we offer a combination of passive and active therapy treatments, including:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
This is a special type of manual therapy, used specifically for patients with lymphedema. Through MLD treatments, your physical therapist will provide a gentle, hands-on massage of both the affected body part and the entire lymphatic system. MLD works by improving the function of the lymphatic vessels and nodes. By doing this, the fluid can be transported throughout the circulatory system.
Therapeutic exercise
Our highly trained physical therapists in Ahwatukee, Biltmore and Tempe, AZ will guide you in designing a gentle exercise programs to strengthen muscles and improve the function of the lymphatic system. These exercises are light and gentle, focused on encouraging circulation and regaining mobility to the affected limb.
Wrapping
Your physical therapist may advise bandaging the swollen area, to further support the lymphatic system. The wrapping works together with the manual lymph drainage to reduce the swelling in your affected area. This bandaging is very specific to lymphedema and is applied according to your specific symptoms and swelling.

Compression
Compression garments helps to prevent the re-accumulation of lymphatic fluid and are part of the long term plan for lymphedema management. Compression garments, such as long sleeves or stockings, encourage flow of the lymph fluid during the day. Your physical therapist may suggest a custom-made compression garment, which he or she will assist in fitting.
